Understanding the lines on your face

Wrinkles & Fine Lines

Not every line is the same, and that is the part most people miss. Some lines only show when you move, and some stay put when your face is at rest. Which kind you have decides what actually helps, so the first useful step is telling them apart. At Santa Barbara Face & Body, Dr. Allison Pontius does exactly that before anything is recommended.

AT A GLANCE

Wrinkles and fine lines are creases in the skin, either dynamic lines caused by repeated muscle movement or static lines caused by collagen loss and sun damage. At Santa Barbara Face & Body in Santa Barbara, California, a board-certified facial plastic surgeon evaluates which type is present and directs treatment accordingly.

Wrinkles fall into two groups. Dynamic lines appear when you frown, squint, or smile and ease when your face relaxes. Static lines stay visible at rest because the collagen and elastin under them has thinned. The distinction is what makes one plan work and another fall flat.

What it is

Dynamic lines are the ones you make. Frown, raise your brow, or smile and they appear, then fade when your face is still. They come from the muscle folding the skin in the same place over and over.

Static lines stay whether you move or not. They sit in skin that has lost the collagen and elastin that once kept it springy, so the crease no longer bounces back.

The reason this matters: a dynamic line and a static line in the same spot on the forehead can look identical in a photo and need completely different care. Left alone, a dynamic line also tends to deepen into a static one over the years, which is why the timing of a first treatment matters as much as the treatment.

2 types dynamic lines you make, static lines that stay, and each needs a different plan

What causes it

Three things drive facial lines, usually together.

  • Muscle movement. Years of the same expressions fold the skin until the fold sets in.
  • Collagen and elastin loss. With age the fibers that keep skin firm decline, so lines that used to spring back begin to stay.
  • Sun. Ultraviolet light breaks down dermal collagen faster than the body rebuilds it, which is the single largest external accelerator of visible lines, and it matters year round on the Central Coast.

Hormones play a part too. The collagen loss of menopause thins the skin and can make lines appear faster in a short window.

Which kind of line do you have

This is the question the whole page turns on, because the honest answer points to different care. Bring it to a consultation rather than guessing, but here is the map Dr. Pontius works from.

What you noticeUsually meansThe route that fits
A line only when you frown, squint, or raise your browA dynamic lineRelaxing the muscle that makes it
A line still there when your face is completely relaxedA static lineResurfacing the skin, or rebuilding what sits under it
A crease that reads as a shadow or a hollowVolume loss, not just a lineRebuild volume and stimulate collagen
Fine surface crepiness across an areaTexture and toneA resurfacing plan matched to your downtime

The value here is not the list, which many pages have. It is that the person reading your face and choosing among these is the same physician who will perform whatever you decide.

Why Santa Barbara Face & Body

Most places that treat lines do one thing well and route you elsewhere for the rest, or sell the treatment they happen to offer. Here the full range sits under one physician, so the plan follows your face instead of a menu. Dr. Pontius is a board-certified facial plastic surgeon with more than twenty years of treating exactly these lines, and that range is what lets the recommendation stay honest, including when the honest answer is to wait or to start small.

When it is worth a consultation

Worth coming in if you

  • See lines appear with expression that used to fade and now linger
  • Have lines that stay when your face is at rest
  • Want to slow lines before they set in, not only soften ones already there
  • Are going through hormonal changes and noticing skin change quickly

Better to talk it through first if you

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a neuromuscular condition
  • Are not sure whether what bothers you is a line, lost volume, or skin texture, which is exactly what a consultation sorts out

What to expect from a visit

The first visit is a read, not a sales pitch. Dr. Pontius watches your face move, looks at it at rest, and tells you which lines are which and what each one would actually take. You leave knowing your options and the realistic order to do them in, whether that is one treatment or a plan over time.

What we offer for this

People who come in about lines are usually deciding between a few routes. These are the treatments matched to the kinds of lines above; which one fits depends on what the consultation finds.

What is the difference between dynamic and static wrinkles?

Dynamic lines appear when you move your face and fade when it is at rest. Static lines stay visible even when your face is completely relaxed. Over time a dynamic line can become a static one as collagen thins under it, which is why the same line can call for different care at different ages.

Can wrinkles be prevented?

Some of it, yes. Daily sun protection slows the collagen breakdown that drives static lines, and treating dynamic lines early can keep them from etching in. The lines you have already will not vanish on their own, but their progression is very much something you can influence.

Do I need injections, or is there another way?

It depends entirely on which lines you have. Dynamic lines respond to relaxing the muscle that makes them. Static lines respond to rebuilding what sits under the skin or resurfacing the surface. Fine surface lines often improve with peels. The point of the first visit is to match the route to the line rather than start with a product.

When should I start thinking about treatment?

When lines you make with expression start to linger a little after your face relaxes. That is the window where a light, early approach does the most, because it slows a dynamic line before it becomes a permanent one.

Is treating wrinkles going to make me look done?

Not when the plan favors restraint. The goal here is a face that still moves and reads as yours, softened rather than erased. That is a placement and dosing decision, and it is the reason the physician who evaluates you is the one who treats you.
