title: "Jaw Clenching & Jawline Slimming"
---

Bruxism is repeated clenching and grinding of the teeth, often during sleep. It overworks the masseter muscle, which can bring jaw pain, tension headaches, and tooth wear, and over time enlarges the muscle so the lower face looks wider and more square. Relaxing the masseter reduces the force of the clench and, as the muscle rests, softens the jawline.

## What it is

Two things people notice from very different angles turn out to share a cause.

- The clench. Bruxism is involuntary clenching and grinding, often at night. It shows up as a sore or tired jaw, tension headaches, earaches, and teeth that wear down or become sensitive.
- The square jaw. The masseter is one of the strongest muscles in the body, and like any muscle it grows with use. Years of clenching can enlarge it, widening the lower face into a square or heavy shape.

Because both come from the same overworked muscle, relaxing it can address the discomfort and the shape together, which is why the two are treated as one concern.

## What causes it

Bruxism is common and its exact triggers vary. Stress and anxiety, sleep patterns, bite alignment, and daily habits all play a part, and much of it happens during sleep, so people are often unaware they do it until a dentist points out the wear. The muscle side follows from the habit: the more the masseter is used, the more it builds, the same way any muscle responds to exercise.

A dental evaluation matters here, because grinding can be linked to bite and, in some cases, to sleep-related breathing, and those are worth identifying rather than only treating the muscle.

## The clench, the shape, or both

This is what the consultation sorts out, because the goal changes the plan and, often, the order.

What you noticeUsually meansThe route that fitsSore jaw, headaches, worn or sensitive teethActive clenching and grindingRelaxing the masseter, alongside a dental mouthguardA widening, square lower face over the yearsAn enlarged masseterRelaxing the masseter so it rests and slimsBoth discomfort and a heavier jawThe full picture of bruxismA staged plan, muscle treatment plus dental careA jaw that looks weak or recessed insteadThe opposite problemBuilding a weak or recessed chin, a different page

The value is not the list. It is that a physician judges how strong the masseter is and how much to relax it, so the clench eases and the jaw softens without weakening your bite or your chewing, and coordinates with your dentist on the parts that are dental.

## Why Santa Barbara Face & Body

Masseter treatment is easy to overdo, and the difference between a jaw that looks slimmer and a bite that feels weak is placement and dose. Dr. Pontius is a board-certified facial plastic surgeon who plans and performs the injections herself, matching the amount to how strong your masseter actually is, and works with your dental care rather than around it. For any surgical lower-face question she consults with Dr. Alain Polynice.

## When it is worth a consultation

**Worth coming in if you**

- Wake with a sore or tired jaw, or tension headaches
- Have been told your teeth show grinding wear
- See your lower face looking wider or more square over time
- Want to ease the clench and soften the jaw together

**Better to talk it through first if you**

- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have a neuromuscular condition
- Have significant bite or dental problems, which should be evaluated by a dentist alongside any muscle treatment

## What to expect from a visit

Dr. Pontius examines the masseter while you clench, gauges its strength, and asks about your headaches, your sleep, and what your dentist has seen. If grinding is the main issue, a mouthguard and dental input are part of the plan. You leave understanding how much of your concern is the clench and how much is the shape, and a plan that treats the muscle without compromising your bite.

## What we offer for this

People come in about a sore jaw, worn teeth, or a squaring jawline and leave with a plan built around the muscle and the habit driving it.

> Bruxism (Teeth Grinding), Colgate Oral Health (United States). Bruxism is involuntary clenching and grinding, often during sleep, associated with jaw pain, headaches, and tooth wear; a mouthguard is a common first recommendation and botulinum toxin is generally not the first treatment.
